Abraham defeats De Carolis

By Jim Dower: Former two division world champion Arthur Abraham (38-4, 28 KO’s) defeated Italy’s Giovanni De Carolis (20-5, 10 KO’s) by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the EWE-Arena, Oldenburg, Niedersachsen, Germany. The final judges scores were 120-108, 119-109 and 119-109.

The fight didn’t look nearly as lopsided as the fight scores showed, as De Carolis looked to have won the first three rounds and definitely the 12th. It’s unclear what the three judges were thinking when they came up with that score but they definitely didn’t give De Carolis much credit at all for the work that he did.

De Carolis was able to easily avoid the slow moving, plodding Abraham in round after round. Abraham was able to land some big shots every now and then, but he was missing with most of punches and looking really bad. De Carolis did a good job early on in backing Abraham up by charging him and throwing flurries. Abraham would retreat to the ropes and just cover up with his high guard. De Carolis was then able to land at will to his body and head and connect with a lot of pretty punches. It’s unclear why Abraham is still fighting with this technique because this was the same thing that WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz was able to exploit earlier this year in March. In that fight, Stieglitz came out throwing 100 punches per round with Abraham just covering up and waiting for him to stop throwing shots. By the 4th, Abraham’s right eye had completely closed from the nonstop head shots he’d been hit with from Stieglitz. The fight was then halted.

De Carolis was able to open up on Abraham with flurries of shots in the first three rounds as well as the 12th. But in rounds 4 though 11, De Carolis spent too much time running from Abraham and there was no way that you could give him those round due to his lack of offense.
