donaire55By Sevak Sarkisian: A long awaited and perhaps expired re-match has been scheduled to take place in Corpus Christi Texas on November 16th between former multi weight world champion’s Vic Darchinyan (39-5 28KO’s) and Nonito Donaire (31-2 20KO’s). The fight is rumored to serve as a part of a triple header on a HBO card.

It was on a warm summer evening in July of 2007 when the undefeated and seemingly unstoppable IBF and IBO world flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan was supposed to make a routine defense of his titles against a young unknown Nonito Donaire (17-1) at the time. It was going to be Darchinyan’s 7th defense of his IBF strap. However, we all know what happen on that night.

Donaire boxed smart and knocked out Darchinyan with a perfect check-hook in the 5th round. Since that fight, Darchinyan has been eager to get a re-match. However, due to boxing politics the re-match never seemed to come to fruition. But know, both fighters are signed to Top Rank Promotions and the fight has been signed.

Nonito Donaire is coming off an embarrassing loss to Rigondeaux in a fight he was favored to win. Vic Darchinyan is coming off an upset win against Luis Orlando Del Valle (16-0) and a knock out win against the overmatched and undersized Javier Gallo (18-6-1) this past May.

However, before Darchinyan’s last two performances’ he was coming off of two straight losses against Moreno and Yamanaka. Even though Darchinyan did what he was supposed to do against Gallo, his defense looked suspect and he took some punches he didn’t have to take. He can get away with that against Gallo but we all know what will happen with Donaire. I hope Vic’s defense will be tighter against Donaire since he has felt Nonito’s power before.

We all know that Donaire was coming off great wins and was dominating the Super Bantamweight division before being outclassed by Rigondeaux in his last fight. Donaire was viewed to be one of the best fighters in the sport before his last fight and was touted to be the next great Filipino fighter. Regardless of him losing to Rigondeaux I still believe Donaire is a great fighter and one of the best little fighters I have seen in my life time.

However, the truth is he is more effective as a fighter when his opponents come to him. He always seems to have trouble with fighters that he has to chase down. That is exactly the reason why Top Rank put this fight together, because it’s the perfect comeback fight for Donaire.

Darchinyan’s style suits Donaire perfectly because Darchinyan is a very aggressive fighter that loves to come forward. I expect Donaire to win the re-match like he did the first fight. Despite being a great fighter in his own right, I don’t see this fight going in Darchinyan’s favor. But I’m sure it will be a fun fight to watch for however long it lasts!
