The Boxing News in Brief

canelo76By Ciaran McKinney: What a few couple of weeks it has been for the world of boxing, and it seems there is a new headline to read every day. The last few months have been dominated by the anticipation for “The One,” the showdown between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather Jr. bout. In my my eyes at least, it lived up to expectation and more.

The unbeaten Mayweather more than confirmed himself as one of the greatest defensive fighters of all time by systematically breaking down and comfortably beating the so called ‘Next Big Thing’ in the sport.

Whatever your opinion may be in regards to Floyd Mayweather, for the boxing purists, he put on a technical masterclass that was simply a joy to behold. In the sixth and seventh rounds of the bout, this writer genuinely felt sorry for the flame-haired Canelo. Hats off to the rising star for staying in their and holding on for the duration.

Personally, I scored the fight 117-111 in favor of the champion. A brief mention of the the judge at ringside who somehow managed to score the fight a draw, She has stepped down from refereeing in the aftermath of her terrible decision. For those who don’t know, the person in question is C.J Ross, who also played foul role in the Timothy Bradley’s contentious victory Manny Pacquiao last year in June.

Moving on to another topic and that is that the much anticipated domestic dust up between David Haye and Tyson Fury has been postponed due to the favorite, Haye, receiving a cut to his head on Friday the 20th of September during a sparring session. Haye has stated that he is ‘Gutted’ and ‘On the Floor’ with the news. You have to ask the question however, why was he sparring with little over a week to go to this grudge match and massive payday? It certainly raises a few eyebrows.

Not only that but a lot of disappointed fans, and I can only hope that the card will be rescheduled for sooner rather than later. It has also left middleweight contender Any Lee in limbo and could see his faltering career stagnate even further as a result.

Finally, I will be posting reports from tonight’s huge domestic card topped by Derry Mathews and Curtis Woodhouse, which can be found on this website and if you want to keep up to date and receive round by round updates on my new twitter account which has just gone live @BoxingNewsVoice

Thanks for reading and I would love to hear you opinions and predictions for tonight’s showdown, your views on Mayweather’s masterclass and of course Hayes withdrawal.
