canelo5443By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s trainer Eddie Reynoso is mapping out potential targets for Canelo to fight in his first bout since being dominated by Floyd Mayweather Jr. earlier this month in an embarrassingly one-sided fight in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Reynoso is interested in having Canelo fight Miguel Cotto next if Cotto can get past Delvin Rodriguez in their fight next month on October 5th. Reynoso sees Cotto as the biggest name that Canelo can get at 154.

It kind of goes without saying that Cotto is the biggest name in the junior middleweight division besides Mayweather, because the division is totally barren of popular fighters other than Canelo, Cotto and Mayweather.

Reynoso said to Diariosdemorelos.com “His is the bigger name, Cotto. I think it would be the most ideal, but will have to see how it goes with Delvin Rodriguez.”

Reynoso went on to rattle off the following names as opponents that won’t be suitable for Canelo: Erislandy Lara, Vanes Martirosyan, Victor Ortiz and Alfredo Angulo.

If Cotto is the only guy that Reynoso sees as suitable for Canelo, then that tells me that it’s time for Canelo to move up to middleweight so that he can fight guys his own size.

Canelo weighed 172 lbs. for his fight with Austin Trout, and 165 for his catch-weight bout against Mayweather. That tells me that Canelo needs to move up to middleweight to take on the likes of Gennady Golovkin, Peter Quillin, Daniel Geale, Darren Barker, Sergio Martinez, Brian Vera, Andy Lee, and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

I don’t know that Cotto will agree to fight Canelo. The fight might not be a doable one anyway due to the Golden Boy Promotions vs. Top Rank rivalry that could make it a tough fight to put together. It would be a good fight, but I think Cotto might not want the fight because it would be a tough one for him.

Cotto would have a decent chance of winning if he were to focus on boxing a little more than he usually does, but it would still be a tough fight for him. Cotto would have to fight smart otherwise he would take a pounding like he did in his first fight with Antonio Margarito.
