Schaefer: The WBC has produced a pure Gold belt for Mayweather-Canelo fight

23(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says that the World Boxing Council has had a special pure gold WBC belt created for this Saturday’s fight between WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) and Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

I’m assuming when Schaefer says it’s “pure gold,” he’s talking about it being 24 K gold and not 14 K. A pure 24 karat belt would be useless to be worn as a belt even for adornment.

Schaefer said “The WBC has produced a very special belt for this occasion. It’s a first time that they have melted a big gold bar into the belt. This is a belt made of pure gold.”

Pure gold [24 k] is a type of gold that’s not mixed with anything else. It’s not mixed with any medals to harden it so that it can be worn as jewelry. It’s not good for things like belts or jewelry because it bends and is marked up easily. That’s why 14 karat gold is used for things like jewelry. It’s mixed with metals, such as copper, zinc and silver to make it hard to bend. If the WBC has created a special “pure gold” belt like Schaefer is saying, then the belt will have to be protected with something that will keep the finish from being dinged up, because 24 karat gold can easily be dented and scratched up.

I think Schaefer is possibly confused about the belt being pure gold. What good would a pure gold WBC belt be if it’s going to be dinged up each time it’s bumped. It’ll lose it’s shape quickly if it’s bent, scratched or hit with something hard. This kind of gold is like putty and nearly useless for things like belts.

The WBC would have been better off having a brick of pure gold given to the winner of the fight so that they could keep it as an investment. I’m not sure why they would need it, because both guys will be making a ton of cash for this fight, but at least with a brick of pure gold, you can do something with it.
