Schaefer predicts 2 mil PPV buys for Mayweather-Canelo

It’s not looking right now, but Schaefer believes it’ll do at least 2 million buys, which will break the record in terms of cash hauled in. The Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez main event is a good lure to attract fans, as is the fact the fight is being held on the Mexican Independence Day holiday this weekend.

Schaefer said to AP “My goal is to break the record. I think we will do 2 million homes, which will make it the single biggest pay-per-view in boxing. Saturday could be a $200 million night.”

It’s going to cost a pretty penny to purchase this card on PPV high definition. You’ll have to pay $74.95, but at least this is a fight card that has a good co-feature bout with Lucas Matthysse facing Danny Garcia. If you purchase the Manny Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios fight card on November 23rd, you’ll likely be stuck watching Zou Shiming fight in the co-feature bout. I’d much rather see Matthysse-Garcia as the co-feature than Shiming against what will likely be another mismatched opponent.

Schaefer shouldn’t count the money before it’s there, because this could be another 1.5 million PPV fight like Mayweather’s PPV fight card against Miguel Cotto last year. Cotto at least made it sort of interesting in the run up to the fight with his interesting life story, but Mayweather Jr. hasn’t had that with Canelo. It’s been pretty dull stuff on Showtime’s ALL Access.

We’ve got to see Canelo hit a heavy bag, talk to his daughter, hit mitts, constantly mess around with his hair, and not much else. His side has lacked intensity that you’d like to see from someone that is going to help Mayweather break the PPV record. I just don’t see it happening.
