quillin33By Allan Fox: WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (29-0, 21 KO’s) will be making his 2nd defense of his World Boxing Organization title on October 26th against the non-top 15 ranked Gabriel Rosado (21-6, 13 KO’s) at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA. This is a confusing fight because Quillin had the opportunity to face WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in a bigger money fight, but instead he opted to face a guy that Golovkin recently stopped in Rosado.

Quillin made his first defense of his title in beating fringe contender Fernando Guerrero by a 4th round TKO last April in a mismatch. The fight was a mismatch the moment that Quillin signed for it, and it turned out to be even more of a one-sided fight than it figured to be on paper.

Rosado is coming off of a 10 round no contest against J’Leon Love from last May. Rosado lost the fight, but the loss was overturned when Love tested positive for a banned substance.

The most logical reason for Quillin facing Rosado, other than him being a beaten opponent for him, is the fact that Rosado is well known in the U.S from having many of his fights televised on ESPN. Rosado looks good when facing 2nd tier opposition, but he’s fallen apart when put in with quality fighters like Golovkin and Alfredo Angulo. Rosado also has a loss to Derek Ennis.

Quillin should win this fight fairly easy, and it’ll give a good gauge of where Quillin is at in comparison to Golovkin. Perhaps if Quillin beats Rosado in convincing enough fashion, he might finally agree to step it up and face Golovkin in the ring instead of the weaker opposition he’s been facing recently.

It took Golovkin 7 rounds to get Rosado out of there, but in fairness to Golovkin, Rosado was running in 6 of the 7 rounds of the fight. The only round in which Rosado didn’t run from Golovkin was the 5th, but Rosado paid for it at the start of the 6th when Golovkin immediately staggered him with a big uppercut. The for pretty much over at that point, as Rosado went into full retreat in bleeding all over the place until the fight was halted in the 7th.
