By Scott Gilfoid: Peter Fury, the trainer for Tyson Fury (21-0. 15 KO’s), has his doubts about whether David Haye (26-2, 24 KO’s) will stick to their new fight date on February 8th in Manchester.
Peter thinks that if WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin is able to pull off an upset of IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko next month in their fight on October 5th, Haye will then pull out of the Fury fight and instead face Povetkin next.
Peter told the Daily Mail “If Povetkin does get the upset then we won’t be holding our breath about our fight with Haye happening on February 8. We know how they operate because they came to talk to us while they were preparing for a fight with Manuel Charr…But if they can get Povetkin that will be even bigger money, plus there will be the world title on the line against a smaller opponent.”
If Peter is so worried then he needs to tell Tyson Fury to go in another direction instead of agreeing to the rematch with Haye, but you know he’s not going to do that.
Fury is going to wait for the Haye fight because it’s his only chance of getting a big money fight right now. Wladimir isn’t going to hand pick Fury, and neither is Povetkin. Fury doesn’t have the experience or the popularity for those guys to select him for a fight.
Fury and his promoter both want the Haye fight; so they’re going to wait on that fight no matter what. I seriously doubt that Povetkin will beat Wladimir.
The chances of that happening are very, very slim because Povetkin is more an overweight cruiserweight with stamina issues than he is a heavyweight. Wladimir is going to totally dominate Povetkin and make him look bad in doing so.
It’s too bad that Fury doesn’t have any options for big money fights, because if he did then he could just walk away from the Haye fight right now instead of waiting around for 4 ½ months for February 8th.
