Mayweather Sr. doesn’t see Danny Garcia as having any chance against Floyd Jr.

garcia65By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. isn’t giving WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (27-0, 16 KO’s) any chance at all in beating his son Floyd Jr. if Garcia turns out to be the one that Floyd Jr. fights next May. That’s something that will be determined based on the outcome of the Amir Khan vs. Devon Alexander fight.

Garcia defeated Lucas Matthysse last Saturday night by a 12 round unanimous decision to put himself in position for the fight with Mayweather, but Garcia also shot himself in the foot by making his win over Matthysse a boring one by running and holding for 12 rounds instead of fighting. That could dash Garcia’s chances of fighting Mayweather because he doesn’t like to fight opponents that hold and run like Garcia did with Matthysse.

Mayweather Sr. told Hustleboss “Can’t neither of them [Garcia and Matthysse] whoop Floyd. Neither one of them. They don”t have a prayer. If they drop down to their knees, the next thing they’re going to go down on their face. That’s the next step.”

Matthysse is probably no longer in the running for the Mayweather Jr. fight after the loss to Garcia, if he was ever really in it to begin with. However, Matthysse would be the more interesting fight for Mayweather Jr. than Danny Garcia because Matthysse would at least come to fight. He wouldn’t clinch and run like Garcia did. It would be a great fight for Mayweather to fight a slugger like Matthysse, and I think it would do well on Showtime.

Mayweather-Garcia would need a referee that does their job by taking points away for the holding from Garcia, because with him clinching all night long to try and slow Mayweather down from throwing his punches, it’ll look more like wrestling match than a boxing fight with Mayweather trying to pry Garcia off of him all night long.

Mayweather really doesn’t have a lot of appealing options. There’s Khan and that’s pretty much it unless he wants to fight Matthysse. A fight against Garcia will be boring and the likely the same with Devon Alexander. Mayweather won’t fight Adrien Broner and Keith Thurman. Marcos Maidana would be an appealing option for Mayweather if he can get past Broner in December, but that’s a big if. Mayweather vs. Maidana would be about as exciting ad Mayweather vs. Matthysse. Those two would be great fights for boxing fans looking to see action for 12 rounds.
