Mayweather could make $100 million for Canelo fight, says Ellerbe

floyd784332By Chris Williams: The Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez “The One” pay per view card has reportedly broken the all-time PPV record for the most money hauled in for a fight with $150 million and counting with 2.2 million PPV buys. There’s a chance that the card could still break the all-time PPV mark of 2.4 million PPV buys from the 2007 fight between Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya. If it breaks that record it’s possible that the fight will generate over $200 million.

Mayweather’s adviser Leonard Ellerbe is saying that Mayweather could end up making $100 million if the pay per view sales break 2.4 million. Mayweather is already set to get a guaranteed $41.5 million for the Canelo fight. But with the extra PPV sales above 2 million, he could wind up with an additional $59 million while Canelo could end up with a lot more than the $12 million that he was set to get.

Ellerbe said to ESPN “Floyd has a chance to make $100 million in this fight. Floyd Mayweather been saying it over and over for years. He’s the most dominant athlete in all of sports and he’s getting paid accordingly.

Whatever Mayweather gets for the fight he’s probably not going to get anything close to that number again unless he chooses to fight Canelo again because pickings are mighty slim in terms of opposition for Mayweather’s bout in May. It’s down to these fighters: Danny Garcia, Amir Khan, and Devon Alexander. None of them have a large fan base in the U.S., and a fight against any of those will likely do poor numbers, maybe even less than Mayweather’s PPV numbers against Robert Guerrero. Those numbers released for some reason.

Mayweather might be better off ignoring all those guys and instead pushing for a rematch against Canelo. It probably doesn’t matter that Mayweather dominated him last Saturday; Canelo is so much more popular than the likes of Danny Garcia, Devon Alexander and Amir Khan that the second fight between him and Mayweather will easily bring in much bigger numbers than what he could get against any one of those above names.

Mayweather needs to fight the guys that the boxing public wants him to fight and the sad face it not too many people are excited about seeing Mayweather fight Garcia, Alexander or Khan right now. There’s no way to sell a mismatch like that because none of those guys have a following and none of them looked good in their last fights.

The only guy that Mayweather can fight right now that will make anywhere close to the money that he made for Canelo is if he faces Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather should tell Golden Boy he’s not interested in none of their guys for his next fight and instead look to work out a deal to fight the Filipino. It’s now or never. If Mayweather waits any longer, Pacquiao will probably get put out of his misery by one of Arum’s Top Rank stable fighters and then Mayweather won’t have the opportunity to get that big payday against him.
