Mayweather: Canelo is not the future; I’m not losing

Floyd Mayweather(Photo credit: Esther Line/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) says he doesn’t intend on losing to WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) this Saturday night in their fight in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather Jr. says he’ll beat the 23-year-old Canelo, but he believes the red-haired Mexican fighter will rebound from the defeat and still be a star. However, Mayweather Jr. doesn’t believe Canelo will be the guy in boxing.

Mayweather Jr. doesn’t say who will be the next big star to carry the sport, but he feels Canelo lacks the talent to be the fighter to carry the sport.

“He’s not the future, but he’s still going to be a star after he loses on Saturday. When I’m in a fight like this I’m not losing.”

Yes, Mayweather Jr. doesn’t lose fights, especially when he’s facing stocky fighters with poor stamina like Canelo.

Mayweather Jr. gets up for these fights when he’s facing someone that the boxing public feels will give him problems, and Canelo will be just another opponent for Mayweather to take apart.

It is difficult to picture Canelo being the future, because with him weighing in the 170s, he’s not going to be able to keep fighting at 154 for very much longer against 147 lb. fighters in the welterweight division.

Canelo will have to move up to at least the middleweight division, and his chances of dominating at that weight will be a lot less than with him fighting in the junior middleweight division against welterweights.

If Golden Boy Promotions keeps Canelo away from WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, the fighter considered by the entire boxing world to be the best fighter at 160, Canelo will probably do already. But if he doesn’t fight Golovkin, Canelo will be considered just a belt holder and “the champion.” Golovkin is too good for Canelo, because he’s a better boxer with more power.

If Golden Boy let’s Canelo fight the 170 lb. Golovkin, he’ll lose to him. But if Golden Boy doesn’t let Canelo fight Golovkin, he’ll be considered little more than a paper champion. That’s why Canelo’s future becomes more bleak once he can no longer fight at 154 against the welterweights that Golden Boy has been feeding to him.
