Mayweather beats Canelo and takes him to school

floyd7By Tom Drury: Last night I witnessed along with the rest of the world a nothing less than scintillating performance by boxing’s pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. This was the fight that has finally silenced Mayweather’s critics and doubters with a on-esided 12 round majority decision win over WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s). When this fight was announced I was one of the first to say this fight was “easy work” for Mayweather. Fans, critics, trainers and fighters all believed this was Mayweather’s biggest challenge. How wrong can you be?

As the build up to this fight gathered pace I actually started to believe the hype that Alvarez could at least give Mayweather competition. However, by the end of round 2 it was clear the young pretender was way out of his depth and in deep water as is the case with all Mayweather opponents. By round 4-5 I was starting to feel sorry for Alvarez, the hopes and expectation of a nation on his shoulders and he was been quite frankly exposed and embarrassed by the genius of Mayweather.

Alvarez was eating pin point jabs, left hooks, lead right hands and screw shots all night, Mayweather’s accuracy was frightening at times and I truly believe Mayweather could’ve stopped the over-matched Alvarez anytime after the 7th. Mayweather’s performance was one which showed the “hard work & dedication” he applies to his craft, Mayweather looked like the younger man in the fight, up on his toes, boxing off the back foot, countering and was fighting in the pocket for large parts of the fight,

Mayweather is now 45-0 with 4 fights left on his lucrative contract with Showtime. The question that will be asked by Showtime/CBS and the fans is who is left that has the credentials for a Mayweather match up? the answer to that is simple. Nobody. Danny Garcia in my opinion put on a thrilling performance to overcome renowned Argentine “Banger” Lucas Matthyse and showed boxing skills and smarts nullifying Matthyse’s power and threat, winning a 12 round decision.

Garcia is a world class fighter, he has proved that time and time again, however he is too limited to compete with Mayweather. Amir Khan is a name being mentioned (I don’t know why) Kahn is a B level fighter at best and wouldn’t make the distance. Many other names are being thrown about too. The fights are they’re for Mayweather but unfortunately for the fans out there that pay to see Mayweather lose you are wasting your money his skill set and ring prowess is unbeatable and in my opinion never seen before in this sport.

The fans need to appreciate this legend while we still have him in the sport, Boxing will suffer without Floyd Mayweather and his god given talent.
