Matthysse faces Danny Garcia this Saturday in Mayweather sweepstakes fight

matthysse55By Allan Fox: This Saturday’s fight has a lot more on the line than the WBA and WBC light welterweight titles for Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s) in facing WBA/WBC 140 lb. champion Danny Garcia (26-0, 16 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Matthysse needs an impressive victory over Garcia to stay in line for a huge payday fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. or perhaps even Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Matthysse is an ideal opponent for Mayweather Jr. to fight in 2014 in addition to Amir Khan and possibly a rematch against Canelo depending on whether their fight this Saturday night is a competitive one.

Matthysee can put himself in a good position to get the Mayweather Jr. fight if he obliterates Garcia like he’s done with his last two opponents Mike Dallas Jr. and Lamont Peterson.

Garcia is a better fighter than those guys, but he’s not a lot better than Peterson. That would be a tough fight for Garcia. Matthysse made it look easy in stopping Peterson in the 3rd round of a one-sided fight.

Matthysse must beat Garcia, and look good doing so. Matthysse can’t make the mistake of trying to box Garcia like he did in his losses to Devon Alexander and Zab Judah. That’s not going to work well for Matthysse if he tries to get Garcia into a boxing match, because he might not win that kind of fight.

To be sure, Matthysse is a good boxer, and he can probably do well enough to make it a close fight if he chooses to fight Garcia like that. However, Matthysse’s best chance of beating Garcia is to go fight after him and force him into a dog fight.

Garcia doesn’t move well around the ring, so he won’t be able to elude Matthysse if he comes after him. Garcia will be forced to slug it out or else. Matthysse must not get caught up in trying to box because that would probably play into Garcia’s hands. He needs Matthysse not to use his power for him to have a chance of winning this fight.
