By Allan Fox: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (26-0, 16 KO’s) has very little chance of keeping his two titles on Saturday night against the tough Argentinian fighter Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Most boxing writers and fans are picking Matthysse to win the fight.
In one poll conducted by RingTV from 2700 people polled, Matthysse was picked by fans over Garcia 68.1 percent by knockout.
Naturally, Garcia doesn’t think he should be the underdog in this fight, saying “I’m ready to win the fight on Saturday night, and I’m going to go out and get his respect immediately.”
Garcia’s father was all over the place in a million directions in trash talking in the final pressure conference. Angle said “Danny wasn’t pampered. He had to out and earn everything he got…If he [Matthysse] thinks he can just come in here and win the world title and bring it back to Argentina where it don’t belong, he’s in for a long night.”
Matthysse was asked after the press conference what his thoughts were on some of the things that Angel Garcia had said about him, and he said “I couldn’t understand anything what he was saying. But his mannerisms when he talked made me laugh.”
In the stare down, Danny Garcia, with both of his title belts over his shoulders chose to keep his sunglasses on while staring down Matthysse. Garcia’s body language didn’t show confidence. Garcia looked beaten already. In comparing how Garcia had looked in his stare downs with Amir Khan, Zab Judah and Erik Morales, he looked a lot less self-assured than he had against them.
If Danny Garcia chooses to come out fast to try and make Matthysse respect him early in their fight, it could end up being a quick knockout victory for Matthysse because Garcia hasn’t been hit by a puncher like Matthysse before. We saw Garcia get staggered by Zab Judah in his last fight in barely winning that bout, but it’s going to be a lot tougher for him on Saturday night with a bigger puncher in there with him in Matthysse.
