maidana32434By Allan Fox: Golden Boy Promotions is working on putting together a first title defense for WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) against the hard hitting #2 WBA, Marcos Maidana (34-3, 31 KO’s) for December 14th on Showtime pay-per-view, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.

Maidana’s manager Sebastian Contursi will meet with Broner’s adviser Al Haymon this weekend to work on putting the fight together for December 14th.

The fight was originally talked about for November 9th, but it got moved off that day reportedly so that Golden Boy would have more time to work on putting the fight together and putting together the undercard. It’s very important for the Broner-Maidana card to have a super undercard because this fight will be PPV, and neither fighter has ever headlined a PPV card before.

Asking fans to pay to see Broner and Maidana fight might be a bit of a reach by Golden Boy. While some boxing fans might be interested enough in Broner to pay to see him, it’s not likely that a lot of them would be willing to pay to see him fight Maidana.

Boxing fans would gladly pay to see Broner fight Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, but probably not too many will be thrilled to pay to see Broner-Maidana. Golden Boy is going to have to put together the mother of all undercards if they want generate a lot of interest in Broner-Maidana on PPV.

Broner won the WBA 147 lb. title last June in beating Paulie Malignaggi by a 12 round split decision. The fight showed that Broner doesn’t have the power, speed or the work rate needed to hang with the top fighters at 147 unless he suddenly finds some power somewhere.

Contursi said to Rafael at ESPN “We talked with Al Haymon only regarding the new date, Dec. 14. We didn’t discuss any numbers yet, but we are traveling to Las Vegas for the Mayweather fight and we’ll meet Al there to start the negotiations.”
