Khan to wait for Mayweather fight rather face Devon Alexander on December 7th

floyd65By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like Amir Khan is going to wait for the Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight in May of 2014 rather than risk his hide in challenging IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander on December 7th. Fighthype is reporting that Khan will be taking the safe route by avoiding the Alexander bout.

Instead of Khan fighting Alexander, it’ll be Zab Judah facing Alexander on a card with Paulie Malignaggi and Shawn Porter.

Golden Boy had been hoping that Khan would fight Alexander, because they promote Alexander in addition to Khan. It would have been a situation where Golden Boy would have been helping out both of their fighters. But it looks like wants the sure thing money fight against Mayweather rather than risking his neck against the fast and highly skilled Alexander.

I can’t say I’m surprised at this news because Alexander would have been an extremely tough out for a fighter like khan. We just saw Khan go life and death with Julio Diaz last April in getting a gift 12 round unanimous decision in London, UK.

It stands to reason that if Khan can’t even beat a past his prime fighter like Diaz without controversy, then he’d no chance against a young Devon Alexander.

Alexander-Judah is a good fight, and I actually like that one a lot better than Khan vs. Alexander. Judah could at least take some of Alexander’s head shots without getting staggered and stopped quickly the way that Khan likely would.

It’s hard to picture Khan fighting Mayweather. I mean, I just never imagined such a flawed fighter like Khan getting the opportunity to fight a big name like Floyd. Khan has lost 2 out of his last 4 fights, and you normally don’t see Mayweather having opponents like that.

I don’t know how Golden Boy is going to promote a Mayweather-Khan because with all of Khan’s losses, how do you get the boxing public to show interest in a mismatch like that.

Khan isn’t really well known with casual boxing fans in the United States, and the hardcore fans remember all the times Khan got knocked out in the past. The fans aren’t going to be excited about the fight because they’re going to see it as a mismatch.
