Khan interested in facing Adrien Broner

khan#2 - CopyBy Scott Gilfoid: If Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) gets by his December 7th opponent IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander, he says he wouldn’t mind facing Adrien Broner or Marcos Maidana. This is if Khan doesn’t get a fight against WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. Khan has already been mentioned as one of the potential opponents for Mayweather to fight next May.

Khan said to Boxing News “I’d love to fight Broner. I think it would be a great fight. He has to get past Maidana, which is a tough task for him…the winner of that fight could be a possibility as well.”

I’d be really surprised if Khan doesn’t get picked by Golden Boy to face Mayweather. No way will Golden Boy Promotions let Khan fight Broner, and of course they won’t let Khan fight Maidana again.

We saw what almost happened to Khan in his win over Maidana in 2010 when Khan was still in his prime. Khan was staggered by Maidana in the 10th round, and if not for the referee constantly getting in the way of Maidana while he was trying to finish Khan off in the 10th, 11th and 12th rounds, I think Khan would have been knocked out. Golden Boy won’t let Khan fight Maidana, especially with a Mayweather fight just over the horizon.

I don’t think Khan is going to get past Alexander in December. But for the sake of argument let’s pretend that he does beat Alexander. Then he’ll be a tempting opponent for Mayweather to fight, because it would give Mayweather a chance to beat someone without a lot of work. Mayweather just needs to hit Khan hard with a right hand and the fight will be quickly over without Mayweather breaking a sweat.

I would like to see Khan fight Broner before getting a fight with Mayweather. Khan should have to get past Broner in order to fight Mayweather. That would make the most sense because Khan would face the mini-Mayweather [Broner] before he faces Mayweather, and if Khan couldn’t win that fight then he wouldn’t deserve the big money fight.
