Garcia/Matthysse vs. Mayweather makes no sense

matthysse84By Nick: With the rising stardom of the undefeated WBA/WBC light-welterweight champion Danny Garcia, and the hard hitting Lucas Matthysse, it is very easy to draw conclusions on why one of the two should be selected to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr (44-0) after his bout with undefeated Light Middleweight champion Saul Canelo Alvarez. (42-0-1) Although it seems like the right move to make, giving the best promotion a fighter could have in this age of boxing, it really does not add up when looked at from a realistic stand point.

Not once, in recent years, has a fighter jumped his own weight class and instantly fought the top ranking, pound for pound, champion in Floyd Mayweather Jr. Every opponent Mayweather has faced since coming into the welterweight division where welterweights themselves who literally had to be top notch and walk through their opponents before facing Floyd. Don’t believe it? Date back all the way from Mayweather’s humble beginnings at the welterweight division. With the exception of Zab Judah, Robert Guerrero and  Victor Ortiz who both dominated Andre Berto, every boxer Floyd has faced had been coming off a KO victory from their previous opponents while in the welterweight division.

What does this have to do with Garcia/Mathysse you ask? Well, Proof!! What else have they proven besides being dominant in their own division? The victor of the Garcia/Matthysse battle should have to fight at the very least one top level fighter in the welterweight division before facing the number one boxer in the division. There is usually a mandatory bout between two welterweights to face the champion anyways. So honestly, I am not convinced at all with the constant speculation that the victor of the Garcia/Matthysse bout will fight Floyd “Money” Mayweather.

If I was a betting man, I would say that whoever is the winner of a potential Kieth Thurman fight at the end of this year, if orchestrated, would go on to fight Mayweather in May or even possibly January or February of 2014. Only time will tell but one things for sure. September 14th, 2013 will be a historical date. Believe that!
