Fans want Mayweather to fight Pacquiao, Danny Garcia or Broner next

canelo84By Dan Ambrose: Manny Pacquiao may have lost his last 2 fights and could lose his next bout on November 2rd, but boxing fans still want to see him face Floyd Mayweather Jr. next May. In a poll conducted by ESPN, Pacquiao was the overwhelming choice for Mayweather to fight next at 60%. The next highest opponent picked was Danny Garcia at 18% followed by Adrien Broner at 10% and Miguel Cotto at 5%. Amir Khan, Devon Alexander and Lucas Matthysse weren’t included in the poll.

Pacquiao would be a good opponent for Mayweather to fight next, but with Pacquiao still being promoted by Top Rank, it’s likely that Pacquiao and Mayweather will never face each other in the ring. It’s too bad because it would still be an interesting fight to see how Mayweather would deal with Pacquiao’s speed, power and high work rate.

I wasn’t impressed with Danny Garcia’s win over Lucas Matthysse last Saturday night. I don’t like see a lot of clinching and running, and Garcia clinched Matthysse as much as Devon Alexander did against Marcos Maidana in his win over him last year. When I see a fighter using 10 clinches per round as a way to avoid getting hit, that to me is a turn off because it makes for a dull fight and you really don’t get a sense of who the better fighter is because one guys is stalling the action.

It would be a sad fight if Garcia were to face Mayweather and use the same clinching all night long to keep him from landing his punches. The difference here is that Mayweather would jab and fire right hands from the outside, and take away Garcia’s clinching ability. But we’d still likely see a lot of running from Garcia, and that would make it an ugly fight.

I think Garcia still has a lot to prove before he gets a fight with Mayweather. I’d like to see Garcia face Matthysse again and try to beat him without holding onto him all night like. I can handle the running that Garcia did, but the clinching is just too off putting. The referee failed to do his job to stop Garcia from holding all night long, and then referee blew it by giving Garcia credit for a knockdown that was the result of a push. With all hugging that Garcia got away with in addition to his controversial knockdown, I think he should have lost the fight by having at least 3 points taken away for holding and his knockdown taken away.

As far Broner goes, Mayweather will never fight him because that’s his buddy and there’s little chance of Mayweather beating up on him unless Broner asked him to make the fight. Broner has already said that he doesn’t want to fight Mayweather ever now matter how much money.
