Deontay Wilder vs. Nicolai Firtha on October 26th

deontay55American knockout artist Deontay ‘Bronze Bomber’ Wilder, will be taking a backwards step in his already non-progressive career, by taking on journeyman Nicolai Firtha on October 26th on the undercard of Karo Murat vs. Berbnard Hopkins fight at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The fight card will be televised on Showtime in United States. It has to be said, this really is a backwards step for the highly touted American.

Wilder’s last fight seemed like a baby step forwards, fighting a former, though well past his best, world champion in Siarhei Liakhovich. Firtha was stopped by Tyson Fury in the fifth round in Fury’s 15th fight, so it is highly unlikely that Wilder is going to learn anything from this fight and it will no doubt be a short nights work.

One has to raise questions about Deontay and his teams motives. Are they simply aiming to beat Lamar Clark’s record of 44 consecutive knockouts by feeding Wilder cannon fodder? It would be a real shame if that’s the case because when he does face quality opposition he will be so used to getting easy knockouts he’s going to struggle to adjust accordingly.

I must say I’m really disappointed with his move, if it turns out to be true, I thought we were finally seeing some progression from Wilder, but obviously not. When is he going to step up the opposition? In my opinion not until he beats Lamar’s record.

The fight will be on the undercard of the Bernard Hopkins vs Karo Murat bill.
