donaire53By Chris Williams: Nonito Donaire (31-2, 20 KO’s) and Vic Darchinyan (39-5-1, 28 KO’s) have a rematch scheduled at featherweight on November 9th in Corpus Christi, Texas, USA. The will be televised as the main event on HBO. Donaire lost his last fight to Guillermo Rigondeaux, and Darchinyan, 37, has lost 2 out of his last 4 fights. Donaire already beat Darchinyan many years ago in 2007.

Things have changed a lot since then for both fighters as Darchinyan is now losing often, and Donaire is no longer the invincible fighter that he was when he was beating up guys at super flyweight, bantamweight and super bantamweight.

Donaire was dominated by Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux in his last fight in April, and rather than fighting Rigondeaux again to try and avenge the defeat, Donaire will be fighting Darchinyan, who already beat. It makes sense in that Donaire needs a win over a known fighter, and Darchinyan is probably safest fight Donaire can get. Donaire has moved up to featherweight and you can bet that he’s going to be facing some very dangerous opponents at some point if he chooses to stay at this weight.

Darchinyan said this about Donaire via Fightnews “I’m gonna break him. I will destroy you.”
In a quick comeback, Donaire said “If you say you will destroy me, I say likewise. I will destroy you ten-fold.”

These were interesting comments and very enlightening to the mind. I just hope the fight is better than their words of wisdom because this could be a disappointment if they’re going to go at each other at this level.”

Donaire moved up to featherweight, but still wanted to fight a super bantamweight.

Darchinyan, who is small even for a bantamweight, asked for a catch-weight in between super bantamweight and featherweight, but Donaire refused. So we’re likely going to see in this fight is a much bigger, much heavier Donaire facing a guy that he might out-weigh by as much as 10-15 pounds.

Darchinyan hasn’t looked good recently in wins over Luis Orlando Del Valle and Javier Gallo. Those should have been easy fights for Darchinyan, but he found himself getting stunned by both guys. Before those fights, Darchinyan was easily beaten by Shinsuke Yamanaka and Anselmo Moreno in 12 round decision losses.
Before his loss to Rigondeaux, Donaire had been beating up fighters like Jorge Arce and Toshiaki Nishioka, both of which were well past their prime. Before that, Donaire defeated Jeffrey Mathebula and Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. in fairly competitive fights.
