By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) is saying it wasn’t his management’s idea for his September 14th fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) to take place at a catch-weight of 152 lbs. Canelo is saying that it was Mayweather Jr’s idea for him to come down in weight to face him at a catch-weight of 152 lbs. for the fight.

Unfortunately, the whole subject was already cleared up recently by Mayweather Jr’s adviser Leonard Ellerbe, who said it was Canelo’s manager that made the mistake of asking for the fight to take place at a catch-weight instead of the normal weight for the junior middleweight division.

Canelo said this about the issue on Showtimes ALL ACCESS episode 3, “That’s a complete lie. They wanted me to drop weight. They were the ones crying about weight. Makes us laugh. It’s just talk, pure talk. They know very well that they were the ones that wanted it at that weight. Line them up, they can’t beat me.”

Just who precisely is Canelo talking about when he says “Line them up, they can’t beat me”? Is he talking about other welterweights or is he talking about wanting to fight Mayweather Jr’s team. I think the fight is between him and Mayweather Jr., not his team. I’d like to think Canelo is talking about wanting to fight guys his own weight like Adonis Stevenson, Sergey Kovalev or Bernard Hopkins, and not just welterweights.

Even if it was Mayweather Jr’s team’s idea for the fight to take place at a catch-weight of 152 lbs., then who can really blame him? After all, he’s facing a guy in Canelo who ballooned up to 172 lbs. in his last fight against Austin Trout after rehydrating from 153 lbs. Mayweather Jr. weighs around 150 lbs. for his fights. Why should Mayweather Jr. not have a catch-weight against a guy that could come into the fight 20 pounds heavier than him. When was the last Canelo fought someone 20 pounds heavier than himself? I don’t recall ever hearing about Canelo fighting a guy weighing 192 lbs., do you?
