Canelo still looking heavy; will he miss the 152 lb. catch-weight?

12(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Dan Ambrose: In photos taken of WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) from yesterday, it looks as if Canelo is still in the 160 lbs. region, and it’s unclear right now from lacking at his photos if he’s going to be able to take off the remaining weight to get down to the 152 pound catch-weight, if he does plan on making that weight.

You can see his mouth is totally dehydrated, and he looks like he’s not drinking water. You have to wonder how many days Canelo has had to limit his liquids to drop weight to where he is now. Canelo should be a lot thinner than he is if he were close to the 152 lb. weight, but he’s not looking skeletal yet like we frequently see Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. when he dehydrates to make weight.

I hope for Canelo’s sake he hasn’t been dehydrating for more than a week, because it’s incredibly unhealthy to dehydrate for a long period of time. We’re talking major stress on your internal organs to limit water intake for days and days.

Canelo looks like he needs to lose at least 8-10 pounds to get down to the 152 lb. catch-weight from what I can see of him. Believe me, that’s a ton of weight to have to lose in the last two days before the weigh-in, especially if Canelo has already lost a ton of water weight just to get to this point.

Canelo is either waiting for the last day to take a massive amount of weight or he might not make the weight at all. If Canelo doesn’t make weight there’s going to be a fine involved. Who pays that fight – Canelo or Golden Boy Promotions is unclear. But with the huge amount of money that’s being generated for this fight, it probably won’t be a big deal to pay if Canelo comes in over the limit by 2 pounds.

I’m sure Canelo is going to try his hardest to get down to 152, but if he can’t make it because his body isn’t letting him dehydrate further, then he’ll have to be satisfied with 154 or 153.
