Mayweather and Canelo(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Members of the media and fighters were each asked by Golden Boy Promotions who will be “The One” in Saturday’s fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) and WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s), and Mayweather overwhelmingly was picked as the fighter that would come out on top in this fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Here is a short list of some of the fighters that are picking Mayweather Jr. to beat Canelo:

Adrien Broner
Lennox Lewis
Mike Tyson
Seth Mitchell
Chris Arreola
Gary Russell Jr.
Zab Judah
Lucas Matthysse
Paulie Malignaggi

Here’s the list of the fighters that think Canelo will win:

Rafael Marquez

Yes, that’s fight. Just one fighter of the entire bunch that was asked by Golden Boy thinks that Canelo will win, and that just happens to be one of Canelo’s fellow countryman.

Again and again these fighters think Mayweather’s experience, speed and defense will be too much for the slow-footed Canelo to win this fight. These fighters like Canelo’s power, boxing skills and his big weight advantage, but they think Mayweather’s talent will be too much for the 23-year-old red-haired fighter. I kind of agree with them. It’s nice to have a 20 pound weight advantage over your opponent like Canelo will have against Mayweather Jr., but you got to have more than just weight in order to win a fight.

To be sure, Canelo’s huge size advantage has helped him beat other welterweights like Matthew Hatton, Kermit Cintron, Alfonso Gomez, and Josesito Lopez [light welterweight], but Mayweather Jr. is a whole different story. He’s much better than those guys, and he’s not easy to hit.

That’s the whole problem fight there for Canelo. Yeah, he’s huge for a junior middleweight, but if he can’t land his shots then what’s the good of him being so much bigger than his opposition. Canelo might as well be fighting slow junior middleweights so that he can land his shots than a speedy welterweight that he can’t lay a glove on like Mayweather.
