Burns v Beltran. The Aftermath

By Stevie Ocallaghan: Anyone who takes the time and reads my posts will know that I am a big fan of British boxing and in particular a Ricky Burns fan, but let me just say that I can’t make an argument against Ray Beltran winning the fight.

After the fight finished, my first thought was of a victory for the tough Mexican by 2 or 3 points. The 8th round being a 2 pointer should have guaranteed Beltran the belt.

Another writer on BN24 has written a couple of articles on why there shouldn’t be a rematch. I disagree
First of all the fight was probably closer than many think. My reasoning is that in the way the rounds where won. The rounds won by Beltran where far more convincing than the rounds that where won by Burns. But Burns did win some rounds.

He clearly won round one and even after suffering the broken jaw in round two, he took that one as well. Even through injury he won in my opinion the last two rounds as well.

All in all,for me After watching the fight again I had Beltran winning one more round than Burns and as I’ve said before the 8th round was the real deciding factor. But if a fighter loses a bout by one round over a 12 rounder, is that enough for that fighter to never think that he could overturn those rounds that where lost. Remember he fought for over 10 rounds with a broken jaw.

A fight a few years ago between another Scot v Mexican in Scott Harrison and Manuel Medina fight ended in the right result and Medina got the verdict, but in the immediate rematch Harrison corrected the flaws from the first fight and stopped the game Mexican in the 11th round.

Why can’t Burns do the same? I can’t see any reason.

Remember, one of the judges, the guy that gave the fight a draw scored the 11 round for Beltran. The other two judges scored rounds eleven and twelve for Burns , so the result could have been even worse for Beltran.
The one thing I’m pleased about is that Ray Beltran flew home and never had a loss added to his record. He didn’t deserve that.

If the return happens, and Ricky sticks to the plan, by the way it’s not a bad idea of Eddie Hearn to employ a proper fitness coach and a nutritionist , Ricky can get the win by a good margin. I don’t think he has the power to stop Beltran but in a reply to another article from one of the readers stated that Beltran couldn’t stop a badly damaged and hurt Burns.

I hope that the rematch happens and according to Ricky, he wants it to happen too. Burns is a fighter, no quit in him and he knows he lost that fight. A fighter with wounded pride is a dangerous fighter and I think that is what will see him win the rematch.
