Broner and Maidana get in small scuffle at MGM

By Allan Fox: WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner and #2 WBA contender Marcos Maidana were involved with a brief scuffle on Thursday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was mostly trash talking between them, and it appeared to be designed to attract interest in their December 14th pay per view fight on Showtime. Broner and Maidana really need to work hard to market this fight for it to bring in any real PPV buys, as neither of them have yet established themselves as PPV fighters.

Broner said this after the scuffle as quoted by Fightnews “Man, I almost just knocked Maidana out just now!!”

Maidana fired back “This liar Broner said he almost knocked me out today. What a liar. He was white like the snow. I told Broner to talk in the ring December 14.”

One interesting thing to note about the two fighters is the size difference between them. In the photo of the scuffle, if you want to call it that, Maidana looked considerably bigger than Broner in height, but not necessarily with weight. Broner will be giving up a couple inches in height against the 5’9″ Maidana, but both guys will likely weigh the same on fight night. Broner tends to gain a lot of weight after he rehydrates, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see him near 160 lbs. when he enters the ring against Maidana.

Maidana is the bigger puncher, and it’s going to be a real test for Broner to be facing a guy with more power than himself. This will be the first time in Broner’s career that he’s faced a big puncher, and it’s going to be a real test to see whether he can take Maidana’s best shots. Broner doesn’t have the kind of power to worry Maidana, so he’;s going to have to try and out-box him somehow. For Broner to win, he’s going to have to increase his work rate because he doesn’t throw enough punches now that he’s fighting at welterweight.
