All roads lead to Canelo v Cotto

canelo992By Kieran Stapleton: “The temptation for greatness is the biggest drug in the world.” Mike Tyson. Two men in the sport of boxing who have acclaimed outstanding reputation for self- achievement and reward are Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. However, when opportunity arose to cement their names in boxing history against the current face of boxing, both men came up short.

So can greatness be achieved after such a big loss? Cotto fought the hard way to gain his reputation in the boxing world after his first loss to Antonio Margarita in 2008 and now Canelo must do the same. Cotto will have a make or break fight against Delvin Rodríguez next month with his newly appointed hall of fame trainer Freddie Roach in his corner.

If Cotto is able to defeat the Dominican fighter next month, is it a viable option to avenge his latest loss to Austin Trout in a rematch to regain his reputation or attempt to defeat the more popular fighter who defeated Trout earlier this year coming off the most popular fight in years.

Canelo may want to move up in weight for his next fight but may need more experience at junior middleweight before he does and Miguel Cotto is a name any fighter would be proud to have on their resume.

Another point to note is that Cotto does not have a long term commitment contract with Top Rank promotions and is a free agent after October the 5th allowing him to sign with Golden Boy promotions. This would result in a less political negations process to make the fight a reality as Canelo is already signed under Golden Boy.

Both men are attempting to redefine how the world views their reputation. One man is adding the finishing touches to his legacy, while the other is only starting to walk the path towards his own. Considering Cotto wins his next fight, both men could find themselves on the road for retrieving their own temptation of greatness.
