Will Floyd Mayweather Jr. be able to hurt Canelo Alvarez?

floyd14By Gerardo Granados: As skilled as Floyd Mayweather Jr. can be, he has never been considered as a power puncher. In his last six fights (from 2007 to 2013) he has scored only two knockouts, and his last against Victor Ortiz was legal but can’t be given that much of merit.

Floyd has average power for the welterweight division but for the light middleweight division he might have below average power and that could be one reason why this fight has a catch weight of 152 pounds to try to weaken Alvarez who is a natural light middleweight with great punching power.

The main problem for Floyd against Canelo might be his weak fists because if he is not able to hurt Alvarez he could end up boxing and running away from Canelo the full round to avoid being mauled due his inability to keep Alvarez off him. Money will be fast enough to connect clean punches on Canelo but it is highly improbable that Alvarez will do the same mistakes that Victor Ortiz did when he was trying to apologize and got hit while having his hands down.

Miguel Angel Cotto was successful connecting on several times clean and solid punches to Mayweather Jr.; Cotto is not as powerful or fast as Canelo is, also is smaller than Alvarez and walked thru Floyd´s punches without too much trouble. If you add the weight gap when both fighters enter the ring Alvarez could enter the ring as a light heavyweight while Floyd barely will surpass the light middle limit and he could end up bullied by Canelo if he is not able to hurt him.

Jose Miguel Cotto hurt Alvarez when they fought, but the young lion that was only nineteen years old at the time and still managed to recover fast and end up stopping the veteran Cotto. It won’t be a big surprise if Floyd wins this fight but will he be able to hurt Canelo?
