Who’s next for Broner?

broner74By Stevie Ocallaghan: Adrien Broner, the man who would be king after his “big brother” Floyd Mayweather Junior retires is at the moment considering his next fight. It looks as if it will be be the tough Argentinian Marcos Maidana.

After a decisive points loss to Devon Alexander early last year he has came back and been convincing in stopping his last 3 opponents. Maidana is a tough fight for Broner but by the same point an extremely hard fight for Maidana. As Alexander and Amir Khan proved, Maidana struggles against skillful fighters of which Broner clearly is but I think the difference hear is Broner is easy to hit and doesn’t have the same movement as Alexander or Khan.

Maidana punches so much harder than Mallignaggi and also Gavin Rees who both kept on tagging Broner.

If Broner gets past Maidana, where does he go next? What does Golden Boy do next with him. I think if he says at welter, which I think he needs to as not to look weak and dodge other fighters at 135 and 140, I think they will try to match him up with the likes of Zab Judah, providing he gets past Pauli in a proposed December fight or the winner of the Shane Mosley Anthony Mundine fight. Any of those 3 guys, after the Maidana fight will keep him busy for another year, he could even fight all 3 and keep his title for another 2 years.

If that happens Oscar and Richard Schaefer will have a much better idea where he is going. They will then know if they have a new cash cow or if they are going to look for somebody else. GBP will not hang on to him if they don’t think he has the star quality that Broner tells us he has.

The guy has skills but he needs to be more mobile and avoid taking as many punches. Broner is only 24 but if you get hit too often it shortens your career. Look at Amir Khan, it seams he has been around for years. He has been in many wars and he has taken a lot of punches but at only 26 it seams his best days are behind him. Only 26 and it seams as if there are not to many years left in the game for Khan.

Broner now has to prove to everybody what he has been mouthing off at saying how good he really is. The Maidana fight is not an easy fight, but as I said previously, I think Golden Boy will match him softly at welter as there are too many pitfalls at 135 and 140. But only time will tell.
