What to get excited about

Floyd Mayweather arrives(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Rusty Nate: So the September month is almost upon us and the fight schedule is firmly in place. We have a fair few things to be excited about as the warriors clash and sort out who will be matched in the next round of bouts.

What am I looking forward to and what do I think may happen in the up coming “big” ones?

Burns vs. Beltran – This is where the month starts, I don’t see this as being too much of a huge fight and I don’t think there will be any surprises. Burns will box clever as he tends to do and I think win this one on a point’s decision or maybe a late stoppage. Beltran, although I don’t honestly know a huge amount about him looks like a pretty standard operator, nothing great but not to bad either. He has a mixed record with 6 defeats and 2 by KO but he also has 17 KO wins from his 28 victories so I guess he can bang a bit. Should be a good warm up to the major fights coming up.

Mayweather vs. Alvarez – We are then straight up to the biggest of “big time” nights with the two unbeaten mega stars facing off in the 152lbs catch weight contest. I love both these guys. Two completely different types of fighter. One, a master boxer with the best defence of modern times, a check hook as accurate as key hole surgery and the speed of 8 puma’s roped together and set off with a fire work in their rear ends. Two, a war horse with good footwork, great combinations, power in both hands and the confidence of youth, size and the invincibility complex that all unbeaten fighters share. This one is massive in the world of boxing and is sure to draw one of, if not the biggest PPV audiences of all time. They both have legions of fans world wide as well as in their respective countries. I would love to say that this will be an all out war and live up to the hype however the two styles just do not merge like that. Canelo I think will play the role of the challenger desperately trying to find his prey whilst Floyd I believe will start traditionally slowly doing enough to win the rounds but not trying to commit to a slug fest. We may even see a similar scenario to the Moseley fight, Floyd looked pretty relaxed (almost lazy) in winning round 1, then he got caught in the second round and that was fight over, Sugar Shane never even got close after Floyd up scaled his game. I see a points victory for Floyd but maybe with a surprise here and there along the way. Dare I risk the prediction that Floyd might momentarily be caught and even floored before getting up and completely shutting out Canelo?

Garcia vs. Matthysse – This one precedes Floyd and Alvarez and could potentially steal the show for excitement. Two guys that really throw punches. This one could in my eyes go either way in the early stages. Either man could be caught early on and floored beyond recovery, that’s what makes the fight such an exciting prospect. My personal thought is that the longer it goes the more comfortable Garcia will become and thus will run away with a points victory by picking off Matthysse with brief combinations whilst easily staying out the way of the wild swinging punches that Matthysse will be throwing late on as he falls behind in rounds. This one I am most looking forward to.

Haye vs. Fury – Well this one rounds off the biggest fights of the month with what has the potential to be a great all out war, a boring game of cat and mouse or a string of controversial rounds with low blows, hitting on or after the bell and squaring up and pushing at the close of each session. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t see either of these guys as dirty fighters at all but I just think that when you get two ego and personalities together like this nothing is ever going to be straight forward. Add to that them both fighting under the British flag and you have one hell of a fight night going on. As long as there is no controversial finishes to this one then I do think that Haye will win by way of KO. Possibly very early or at least by the middle rounds. Fury is huge in size and weight and so has the power to land that perfect KO punch that could give him the victory but his challenge is catching Haye with it, who is notoriously fast on his feet, with his hands and with his head. If Fury can work on his timing of the punches then it may only take 1 to rock the boat in his favour.

Moving into October we have Cotto, Klitschko, Bradley, Marquez, Povetikin, Salido, Crawford, Alvarado, Brook, and Hopkins.

Looks like a great couple of months shaping up in the boxing world. I hope you all are looking forward to it. Post your comments to let me know what you think will happen!
