Robert Guerrero turns down Thurman fight; Wants Broner-Maidana winner

guerrero22By Allan Fox: Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-2-1, 18 KO’s) has reportedly turned down a fight against interim WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (21-0, 19 KO’s) for November 2nd or 9th, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.

Instead of facing Thurman, Guerrero wants to fight the winner of the November 9th pay-per-view fight between Adrien Broner and Marcos Maidana. It appears that that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer may accommodate Guerrero, but he’ll have to wait until next year for the fight to happen.

Schaefer to Dan Rafael at ESPN “I felt Thurman against Guerrero would have been an interesting fight. But Guerrero and his team were not interested. I said ‘OK, but that wouldn’t be until next spring,’ and they said they would be OK with waiting.”

Instead of Thurman fighting Guerrero, Schaefer is now looking to match Thurman against Jesus Soto Karass. This is probably the best Soto Karass can hope for fight now, even though he looked good in stopping Andre Berto in the 12th round last July. Thurman is coming off of a 10th round TKO win over Diego Chaves last July in a fight where Thurman had to show a defensive side of his game by using movement.

It doesn’t look as if Golden Boy is in a hurry to try and match Thurman up against Adrien Broner. The fact that Schaefer is happy to match Guerrero up against the winner of the Broner vs. Maidana fight, gives the impression that he doesn’t want the less popular Thurman to face Broner. It’s not surprising if that’s the case, because Thurman would have too much size and power for the 5’7” Broner, and it might turn out to be a mismatch.

Guerrero seems to know his limitations too. He wouldn’t match up well with Thurman, and he’d likely get stopped or take a beating in losing a decision. Guerrero can afford to say no to a Thurman fight, because he just a big payday fight of $3 million in losing to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last May. With that kind of money, Guerrero can sit and wait for the fight that he wants instead of taking risky bouts like the Thurman fight.
