Pacquiao says his boxing career isn’t over

pac889By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO’s) and Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO’s) met in New York on Tuesday as part of their U.S press tour to generate interest in their pay per view fight on HBO on November 23rd from Macao, China.

The two fighters were pretty mild with their comments, with Manny still seemingly making excuses for his 6th round knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez from last December instead of moving on and putting his focus on the Rios fight.

Pacquiao said “I believe in my last fight many people are thinking my boxing career is at an end. But I’ll tell you think, in the last fight my condition was amazing. My condition was one of the best in my boxing career. It just happened that in the 6th round I got too careless and too aggressive and he got me with a good shot. But if we review the fight my condition was one of the best I’ve had. That’s why I chose Brandon Rios. I know he’s a good fighter, He throws a lot of punches and he’s a very aggressive fighter.”

It looks like Pacquiao is mistaking the idea that just because you’re in good physical health that you’re not supposed to get knocked out. That has nothing to do with it.

Pacquiao’s problem seems to be that he’s not taking the shots as well as he used to, he’s not reacting to incoming punches as well as he used to, and he’s not fighting as hard as he used to. He’s needs more rest breaks in between flurries.

A lot of fighters that have taken a lot of punishment in their careers in terms of head shots look physically fine. It’s just that when you put them in fights, they struggle and don’t fight at the level they once did.

There’s lots of fighters in the sport of boxing that physically look to be in perfect health, yet when they get nailed in the head with a hard shot, they go down and stay down.

It doesn’t matter that they worked out a lot, and put their body in good condition. If they can’t take a head shot, then they’re going to have problems. It looks like that’s Pacquiao’s problem. He’s in great condition, but he’s getting hurt when he gets nailed, and he’s not doing a good job of reacting to punches thrown at him.
