Matthysse wants Mayweather fight after he takes care of Danny Garcia
By Dan Ambrose: WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse has huge hopes for the future if he can get past WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia on September 14th on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight. Matthysse wants to fight Mayweather, and he thinks that a big over Danny Garcia could open the doors to make that fight a reality.
Matthysse said to ESPN Deportes “This is a very important fight. It will open doors for bigger fights. Hopefully, I can fight Mayweather.”
That would be a good fight for both Matthysse and Mayweather. Having Matthysse as Mayweather Jr’s opponents after the Canelo fight would guarantee that Mayweather’s next fight would be an exciting one. Matthysse is certainly a much better option than seeing Mayweather Jr. fight the likes of Amir Khan or Devon Alexander.
Khan’s name has been mentioned as a possible opponent for Mayweather after Canelo, but that’s not a great fight. Khan is kind of chinny, and he’s already been beaten 2 out of his last 4 fights. Matthysse vs. Mayweather would be a much better fight because Matthysse would be someone that Mayweather Jr. would have to respect due his ability to end fights with a single punch.
There’s really not much else for Mayweather Jr. to fight once he gets past Canelo. Mayweather Jr. will still have 4 more fights on his contract with Showtime and these are the likely guys he’s going to be fighting: Amir Khan, Devon Alexander and Danny Garcia.
You can exclude Garcia’s name from the list if Matthysse knocks him out next month, but there’s no guarantee that Mayweather Jr. will say yes to a fight with Matthysse either. He’s really dangerous, and a much more difficult opponent than Khan or Alexander. You can make an argument that Matthysse is even more dangerous than Canelo, because he’s got a lot better stamina, and he’s able to fight in close much better as well.
Matthysse can’t make any mistakes against Garcia because a lot is riding on this fight. If there is a chance that he could get a fight with Mayweather Jr. in the future, then a loss to Garcia will ruin those chances.
