matthysse84By Dan Ambrose: WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s) has reportedly cancelled his three-city press tour with WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (26-0, 16 KO’s) to publicize their September 14th pay per view fight on HBO at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, According to Badlefthook.

Matthysse canceled the press tour, and Garcia is not pleased in the least. There’s no word about why the press tour was canceled by Matthysse, but it’s likely that it would have been a hardship for him, as he’s from Argentina.

Matthysse would have had to travel all the way from Argentina to take part in the three city press tour in New York, Los Angeles and Puerto Rico.

There’s no word yet from Golden Boy Promotions about the cancelled press tour, but they can’t be happy about it because it would have helped drum up interest in the September 14th card, which is headlined by Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

As interesting as the Matthysse-Garcia press tour would have been, it’s unlikely that it would have had a big impact on the PPV sales for the September 14th card, because boxing fans already are well aware of the card, and having Matthysse and Garcia hitting only three cities in the U.S really wouldn’t change much of anything.

It would be mainly the fighters preaching to the choir rather than finding new fans that were sitting on the fence about whether they would purchase the fight or not. Matthysse isn’t well in the U.S with casual boxing fans, and Garcia doesn’t have a huge fan base either other than on the East Coast in the Philadelphia area.

Matthysse is better of focusing his time on training rather than being flown from one city to another, and missing out on training. The main thing is for Matthysse to win the fight, because if he can beat Garcia in an impressive fashion, he could find himself as one of Mayweather’s opponents in 2014.
