Khan vs. Alexander & Judah vs. Malignaggi possible for December 7th

malig77By Allan Fox: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is hoping to put together a double-header between Amir Khan vs. Devon Alexander, and Zab Judah vs. Paulie Malignaggi on December 7th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, according to RingTV.

There’s also the possibility that former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz could be on the card against an opponent still to be determined if Schaefer can persuade Ortiz to agree to fighting on that date. Ortiz hasn’t fought since June of 2012 due to a broken jaw.

Schafer said to RingTV “Zab Judah against Paulie Malignaggi…we will have to see if that could be done…Zab’s goal is to get another big fight…I think that Paulie Malignaggi is definitely a credible opponent, given the performance he showed against Adrien Broner…I would like to see the return of Victor Ortiz on that card.”

It might be tough for Schaefer to get Ortiz back in the ring for this card, because he’s making a movie right now with Sylvester Stallone, and he’s been out of the ring for ages since his loss to Josesito Lopez. Whether he would want to come back and fight in the #3 position on a fight card is the big question.

Ortiz made a lot of money in his loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September 2011, so the motivation might not be the same as it is for a fighter who hasn’t seen a big payday.

Judah will likely say yes to a fight against Malignaggi. However, getting Malignaggi to agree to the fight might be a lot tougher. He doesn’t like to fight on undercards, and unless he’s paid top dollar to fight in a co-feature bout against a fighter as fast as Judah, I think Malignaggi might say no to that fight.

Malignaggi lost his WBA title to Adrien Broner in a close 12 round split decision defeat last June. Judah was beaten by WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia by a close 12 round unanimous decision last April.

Khan and Alexander is going to be a huge fight for more ways than one. The winner of the fight could find himself facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. at some point next year. Golden Boy Promotions has made no secret about their desire to match Khan vs. Mayweather Jr. in 2014. Alexander’s situation is a little more murky. He might not get a fight with Mayweather even if he badly beats Khan, because he doesn’t have a big fan base, and his fighting style is sometimes less than crowd-pleasing due to his habit of holding a lot. That might prevent him from getting a fight with Mayweather even if he badly beats Khan.
