By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten heavyweight talent Deontay Wilder (29-0, 29 KO’s) scored his 29th straight KO win with a 1st round knockout win over former WBO heavyweight champion Sergei Liakhovich (25-6, 16 KO’s) on Friday night at the Fantasy Springs Casino, in Indio, California, USA.
The 6’7″ Deontay nailed Liakhovich with a big right hand that drove him backwards from the force of the sledgehammer blow. Deontay added another right hand, and then put the coup de grace with a tremendous right hand to the head that sent Liakhovich down on the canvas. Liakhovich stayed down for a long time before getting up.
After Liakhovich hit the canvas, he laid on the canvas kicking his legs in the air in a knockout spasm. He was seriously hurt from the last right hand to the head that he took.
No one has ever knocked Liakhovich out like that before during his career.
In winning the fight, Deontay keeps his WBC Continental Americas heavyweight title.
I hate to say it but there’s probably nobody in the heavyweight division other than perhaps WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko that can take Deontay’s power, and even with Vitali, I have my doubts. If Deontay nails the 42-year-old Vitali with one of his sledghammer right hands like the ones he stopped Liakhovich with, I can see Vitali kissing the canvas face first in a highlight reel knockout. Of course, I seriously doubt that Vitali would ever agree to fight a talent like Deontay. I could see Vitali opting to retire rather than agreeing to take the fight and eating right hands from Deontay.
Deontay’s next victim will likely be Chris Arreola if he can get past the hard hitting Seth Mitchell on September 6th. I like Arreola to stop Mitchell, but anythings possible if Mitchell comes out fast and unloads on Arreola. As we saw in Arreola’s recent 12 round unanimous decision loss to Bermane Stiverne last April, Arreola took a lot of punishment to the head in that fight, and he may not be the same fighter he once was when he enters the ring against Mitchell.
