By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco (29-3-1, 22 KO’s) defeated Fidel Monterrosa Munoz (31-8-1, 25 KO’s) by a 5th round TKO on Saturday night in his fight at the Hipódromo Caliente, Arena Tecate, Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico.

DeMarco dropped Munoz down twice in the 5th round to get the stoppage. DeMarco suffered a cut during the fight over his left eye from a clash of heads. Other than that, DeMarco dominated the fight, and got through unscathed.

DeMarco, 27, was fighting for the first time since his 8th round TKO loss to Adrien Broner last year in November.

DeMarco could end up facing the winner of the October 19th fight between Mike Alvarado and Ruslan Provodnikov, according to ESPN Deportes. DeMarco’s promoter at Zanfer Promotions is looking to put that fight together.

It would be difficult to imagine the slender DeMarco facing the likes of Provodnikov or Alvarado, because those guys are built a lot more solidly, and they likely would outweigh DeMarco by a considerable margin after they rehydrated.

If DeMarco doesn’t mind potentially being out-weighed by 20 pounds, then he should take the fight. It’ll probably give him his best payday of his career.
Before his loss to Broner, DeMarco had won 5 straight fights. He was stopped by the late Edwin Valero in the 9th round three years ago in 2010.

Just as in the case of the Broner fight, DeMarco couldn’t handle Valero’s power, and he ended up taking a lot of punishment in Valero’s last fight of his career.
DeMarco would better off staying at lightweight and looking to fight Omar Figueroa for the interim WBC lightweight title, or going after the WBO champ Ricky Burns.
