Garcia doesn’t see anything special in Matthysse, and he feels he’s going to be able to out-box him without any problems at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Garcia-Matthysse will be the co-feature bout on the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez pay per view card on Showtime.

Garcia said “To me Matthysse is just a regular fighter. He already has two losses. I don’t consider him one of the best…Let’s see what happens when I show him different looks, back him up, work angles. I can fight backing up. Can he?”

What Garcia isn’t saying is that most of his power is in his left hook, and if Matthysse can take that away, he’s going to be in deep trouble in this fight. That’s what this fight boils down to.

Garcia is going to have to try and beat Matthysse using his left, because if he can neutralize that weapon the way that Zab Judah did last April, then Garcia is going to have a serious problem. Judah studied Garcia’s fights, and realized that he mostly just throws left hooks.

Once Judah saw that, he changed his defense to take that away, and he did a great job of limiting those punches. Garcia still beat Judah with his right hand shots, but it was a really fight. Judah didn’t have the kind of power that Matthysse does, because if he did, Garcia would lost that fight. He wouldn’t have been able to take getting hit hard for 12 rounds. As it was, he was bleeding and he looked exhausted by the end of the fight.

Garcia does fight well going backwards, but he only throws left hooks while backing up. There’s no variation to his game. It’s all left hooks.
