Danny Garcia: If Matthysse comes out swinging on me like he did Peterson, he’ll get dropped

matthysse543By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (26-0, 16 KO’s) says he’ll take advantage of Lucas Matthysse’s aggressiveness by immediately putting him down on the canvas if he comes out fast looking to score a quick KO in their fight on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Garcia thinks Matthysse has a padded record of knockouts, and he thinks he’s lost against the two best he’s faced during his career in Devon Alexander and Zab Judah. Garcia doesn’t see those losses as controversial like most boxing fans. He thinks Matthysse deserved to lose to Judah and Alexander in their own hometowns.

Garcia said to Dan Rafael at ESPN “I guarantee you that if he comes out swinging at me like he did against [Lamont] Peterson, he will go down. I think Peterson was scared because he was backing up. I am not scared…[Matthysse] is buzzing a little bit off his last couple of victories, and people are hyping him up.”

I don’t think the reason why Peterson was knocked down had anything to do with Peterson being scared of Matthysse. It looked more like the case of Peterson legitimately being hurt by head shots he took in that fight from Matthysse. It’s kind of scary that Danny Garcia doesn’t have the sense enough to realize when someone is hurt from a punch, and when someone goes down because they’re scared. Peterson went down because he was hurt, and he was stopped because he was hurt.

As far as the hype that Matthysse is getting due to his recent string of quick knockouts, you can make the same argument about Danny Garcia getting hyped due to his recent wins over a fragile-chinned Amir Khan, an over-the-hill Erik Morales and a past his prime Zab Judah.

I thought Matthysse did a better job against Judah three years ago compared to how Danny Garcia did last April. Matthysse dominated the last 8 rounds against Judah, but lost in Judah’s home arena by very controversial decision.
