chisora45By Stevie Ocallaghan: On 21 September at the Copper Box Arena in London, Dereck Chisora takes on unbeaten Russian Denis Boytsov for the vacant EBU European Heavyweight title.

A good match-up for two fighters who are angling for position in the rankings, which has got to be a good thing.

Chisora has quite possibly had the hardest run of fights out there over any other heavyweight on the planet and that includes the K brothers. David Haye, Vitali Klitchko, Robert Helenuis and Tyson Fury in the last 2 years. Not to mention unbeaten American Malik Scott who i rate very highly. All top 10 heavyweights with one or another of the organizations. No other Heavy on the planet has done that. Remember, this fight will only be his 22nd pro contest. Others should take note.

This is a fight that will suit Chisora as they are, for heavyweights relatively small at 6’1″ each. Boytsov brings with him a 33-0 with 26 KOs. Almost an 80% KO ratio which is more than decent but in reality he has been fighting at a much lower level. His last decent opponent was Dominick Guinn who he beat over 10 rounds last year, but Guinn was easily 6 years past his best.

Another fighter he beat and ko’d in the 6th of an 8 rounder 2 years ago was the journeyman Matt Greer. Greer is really only known for being more fodder for American Contender Deontay Wilder who stopped him in the 2nd round of their contest. Greer has since went on to get stopped in his two other contests since.

Boytsov has been carefully managed to get to this situation where he is now after a 10 year career only now fighting for a European title. Boytsov previously turned down a fight against Brit contender and undefeated fighter in Tyson Fury.

I think Boytsov has looked and seen that he has 4 defeats in his last 7 fights, but with the exception of the David Haye fight he gave a great account of himself, arguably out pointing Helenuis and also giving Vitali and Tyson a lot of trouble.

I don’t think Chisora will stop Boytsov but I do think he will win by about 3 rounds in an entertaining match-up which will hopefully lead the way to another very entertaining contest against the afore mentioned Deontay Wilder.

Chisora is the type of fighter Wilder needs to be facing now to be taken seriously as a contender. I honestly can’t pick a winner between them if they face.

Okay, Chisora was knocked out by David Haye last year, but Haye has immense power. But also Wilder has been floored and almost stopped against journeyman Harold Sconniers. but in fairness, Deontay got back up to KO Sconniers. That’s the mark of someone not willing to give up.

All in all, Chisora v Boytsov is a good match-up, but one I expect Dereck to win and from there on, hopefully get more big fights down the line. A rematch with Tyson Fury or a match-up with Wilder.
