By Dan Ambrose: Due to former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s small cut that he suffered last week in sparring, his fight with Brian Vera (23-6, 14 KO’s), originally scheduled for September 7th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, has been pushed back to September 28th and will be taking place at StubHub Center, in Carson, California, USA.

The Chavez Jr-Vera fight will be televised on HBO as part of a split-site double-header, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. The other fight will be Adonis Stevenson vs. Tavoris Cloud.

It’s interesting that the Chavez Jr-Vera fight is being shown on HBO, because it’s not going to be a competitive fight. It’s interesting that HBO is saying yes to this fight, but not saying yes to a fight between Andre Ward and Dimitri Sartison.

That fight would have been about as competitive as the Chavez Jr-Vera fight. The only difference is that Chavez Jr. brings in big ratings for HBO from his large fan base in the United States, and Ward doesn’t have nearly the same kind of fans that Chavez Jr. does despite being the better fighter.

There are rumors floating around about why the Chavez Jr. vs. Vera fight had to be rescheduled. The official word is that Chavez Jr. suffered a cut over one of his eyes and that made it necessary for the fight to be postponed. But the rumors are that Chavez Jr. was still over 200 pounds in training, and that he wouldn’t have had enough time to take off enough weight for him to dehydrate down to 168 lbs. to make weight for the fight.

Chavez Jr. is fighting at 168 lbs. instead of 160 lbs., but he’s put on a lot of weight while being out of action. By having the fight take place on September 28th instead of September 7th, Chavez Jr. will have another three weeks to burns off the blubber that he’s put on. At any rate, it’s a rumor, and it’s possible that Chavez Jr. would have been able to make weight for the September 7th. However, Chavez Jr. looked huge in a recent photo of him, and he didn’t look anywhere close to 168.
