Canelo says he’s losing 3 kilos per day in training for Mayweather

canelo77By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) says he’s not worried about making the 152 lb. catch-weight for the fight, despite him barely making the 169 lb. mandatory weight limit a little over a week ago. Canelo claims he’s losing 6 ½ pounds each time he trains, and he feels that losing weight like this will make it easy for him to get down to 152.

Canelo said “I lost 3 kilos every day. I am ahead of the curve. I’m not worried about weight.”

I think Canelo is showing his youth here. You don’t lose 6 pounds of actual weight in one day. It looks like Canelo is mistaking water weight for muscle weight, which what he really needs to lose.

Canelo came into his last fight weighing 172 lbs after weighing in at 153 lbs. That’s 18 pounds over the junior middleweight limit. We’re talking Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. type of rehydration, and I don’t know how it didn’t kill Canelo to take off all that water weight, and then put it back on within 24 hours to fight.

This time Canelo looks like he’s on course to be even bigger than he was in the Trout fight. Canelo weighed in more for his 30-day weigh-in for Mayweather than he did for the Trout fight. So if he go by that, Canelo might be in the 173 lbs. neighborhood by the time he enters the ring.

The super middleweight limit is 168, so Canelo is even heavier than that. The upper light heavyweight limit is 175 lbs. That means Canelo would be close to being too big even for a light heavyweight. If he comes over 175, we’re talking a cruiserweight fighting at junior middleweight.

When you lose water weight from working out, you put it back on after you go home drink water. Canelo might be burning calories with exercise, but he doesn’t have any weight to take off other than muscle weight, because he doesn’t have fat on him.

The only way you lose muscle weight is to eat less and do a ton of aerobic exercise. Watching Canelo job on the 24/7 series, he doesn’t look like he’s running enough to lose muscle weight. The only other weight to lose muscle is to not eat, but Canelo looked huge in the recent All ACCESS series, so I doubt he’s missing any meals.
