Canelo knocking out sparring partners

Canelo and Mayweather(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Eric Gomez, the vice president of Golden Boy Promotions, says that WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) has been knocking out a lot of his sparring partners at his training camp in Big Bear, California. Gomez said that Canelo has knocked out four sparring partners thus far in training camp, and supposedly these are notable sparring partners.

Gomez told Univision “He’s already sparring and knocked out four other sparring partners…everyone knows that he is very strong, and also has speed. And that will be the key to beat Mayweather…it should be more than 1.5 million pay per view buys. I hope we get to 2 million.”

When I hear that Canelo is knocking out his sparring partners it makes me think Canelo needs new sparring partners than it says about how great Canelo is as a puncher, because he’s one of those fighters that needs to hit you for a long period of time before he gets stoppages.

Canelo doesn’t knock guys out immediately. It takes him many rounds to get most of his knockouts, and he needs opponents that stand directly in front of him without moving for him to get a stoppage.

If Canelo is knocking everyone out that tells me that Golden Boy Promotions has done a poor job of getting sparring partners that fight in the same style as Mayweather, because Canelo needs a guy that stands there for him to get knockouts. We saw how Canelo couldn’t do anything with Austin Trout last April, and he really didn’t use a whole lot of moving in that fight due to the open scoring and the wild scores that the judges had.

Canelo’s biggest problem is going to be trying to take all that weight that he’s put on. Canelo is heavier now than he was at the same period 1 month before his fight with Trout, and Canelo came into that fight at 172 lbs.

Canelo is going to have to take off an extra 2 pounds to get to 152 lbs. to make the catch-weight for this fight, and looking at that picture of Canelo this week at the 30-day weigh-in, I don’t see where Canelo is going to be able to take off any additional weight. He already looks cut up. They’re going to have to really dehydrate Canelo to a dramatic level to get him down to 152 to make the fight, unless he’s just going to blow off the catch-weight and take the fine for coming over the limit.
