Velasquez thinks the 23-year-old Canelo badly wants to beat Mayweather, and he wants the success that will come with beating boxing’s #1 fighter.

Velasquez said to esnewsboxing.com when asked who will win the Mayweather-Canelo fight: “Canelo. He’s hungry; he’s got a lot of skills.”

I don’t think that’s going to be enough for Canelo to win. Being hungry is nice, but then again so has 44 other guys that Mayweather has fought. Every guy he faces is hungry. Canelo is no different in that regard. As far as skills go, Canelo doesn’t have the skills that Mayweather has, and it’s not even close.

That argument would work if Canelo were facing a less talented fighter than Mayweather, but he’s not. This isn’t Austin Trout, this isn’t Carlos Baldomir, this isn’t Matthew Hatton.

Canelo will have to find another way to win because he’s short on skills and the old ‘he’s hungry, therefore he’s going to win’ argument won’t apply in this fight.

It takes more than just being starving fighter. Besides that, Canelo is hardly starving. He’s been making a ton of money for years now despite not being a pay per view fighter. Canelo isn’t hungry like fighters that haven’t had the press and the popularity that he has had. I think Canelo is the opposite of hungry. He’s got a belly full already.

I think Velasquez is going to be disappointed on September 14th when Canelo comes up empty. This isn’t a wrestling match that Canelo will in or a MMA type fight. This is a professional boxing match where the quicker guy with the faster hands, the better talent, and the better experience will win. Unfortunately for Canelo, he’s short on all those qualities.
