Broner’s trainer: Adrien doesn’t get credit from fans

broner999By Allan Fox: Mike Stafford, the trainer for WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s), thinks the 24-year-old Broner doesn’t get the credit he deserves for his accomplishments. It seems that Stafford expects that Broner would be more embraced after his recent win over WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi instead of criticized by boxing fans.

Stafford said to Hustleboss.com “They’re always going to be harsh. He’s 23, and he’s fighting a 33-year-old veteran [Malignaggi] and they don’t give him credit. That’s crazy. The kid aint nothing but 23 and doing a spectacular thing. They expect too much out of him. And they feel that he doesn’t hold up to what they think he’s supposed to do and they’re saying he’s not the one.”

Broner is 24, not 23. Stafford is off a by a year. The reason that Broner has taken so much criticism after the Malignaggi fight is because Broner has praised himself constantly, proclaiming that he’s the future of boxing. When a fighter does that kind of thing, boxing fans expect a better performance out of him than what they saw against Malignaggi.

Amir Khan did a much better job in beating Malignaggi than Broner did, and so did Ricky Hatton. Both of those fighters easily beat Malignaggi when he was a little younger. When fans saw that Broner wasn’t good enough to dominate Malignaggi too, then the fans naturally criticized him, and felt let down.

The outcome that came from that fight is that many boxing fans no longer see Broner as the future of the sport, if they ever did. Many of these fans see Broner losing to the likes of Keith Thurman, Lucas Matthysse, Devon Alexander, Danny Garcia, and even Marcos Maidana when he faces them.

Golden Boy Promotions would be wise to steer Broner back down to 135 lbs. before gets exposed by any of the top welterweights, because a loss to one of them will dash the plans of making Broner a pay per view star.
