Broner to keep both 135 and 140 lb. world titles; wants Maidana next

broner444By Allan Fox: WBC lightweight and WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) said last night that he plans on keeping both of his world titles, and he said he’ll defend them when he sees a big fight in front of him in those weight divisions.

Broner also said he wants to face WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse if he can get past WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia in September in their fight on the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Broner said to Showtime “Everybody isn’t Adrien Broner; everybody isn’t Floyd Mayweather. We’ll keep both [world titles]. If it’s a big name at lightweight or a big name at welterweight, I’ll fight anybody. If [Marcos] Maidana wants to fight me, I’ll f*** him up. They’re talking pay per view. Let’s make it happen.”

If Broner wants to keep his lightweight title then he’s going to have to defend it soon, because it’s already been 6 months since he last defended the strap in defeating Gavin Rees in February. With Omar Figueroa now the WBC interim lightweight champion after beating Nihito Arakawa last month in an exciting fight on Showtime, that would seem to be a potential next fight for Broner at 135 when he does make his next title defense of his WBC lightweight title.

There are also the options for Broner to fight unification bouts against lightweight champions Ricky Burns, Miguel Vazquez or Richard Abril. However, setting up a fight with Burns might prove to be impossible because the Scottish fighter has turned down fights with Broner on two occasions in the past, and it’s not likely anything will change in that regard in the future. Broner vs. Figueroa could be the best fight that can be made at lightweight if Broner is serious about wanting to keep that title.

Next up for Broner will be Maidana. It’s going to be an easy fight to get put together, as both guys are with Golden Boy Promotions, and both want the fight.
