matthysse543By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (26-0, 16 KO’s) and WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s) both weighed in for their mandatory 30-day weigh-in for their fight next month on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Matthysse weighed in at 146.6 lbs., according to Fightnews.com.

That puts Matthysse only 6.6 lbs. away from the 140 lb. light welterweight limit for the fight. Garcia came in at 151 lbs., and just missed the max weight allowed of 154 lbs. for the weigh-in.

Garcia has reputation for ballooning up after he rehydrates, so it’s possible he could be the heavier guy when the two fighters step foot in the ring on September 14th. However, Garcia will have to outweigh Matthysse by a dramatic amount of weight for it to help him in this fight, because Matthysse is the bigger puncher.

At best, Garcia might have a 10 pound weight advantage when they face each other, and that’s probably not going to be enough. Garcia needs a weight advantage of 20 pounds or more to beat Matthysse, and even then I’m not sure he’d be able to handle Matthysse’s superior power.

Garcia recently beat Zab Judah by a 12 round unanimous decision last April. Garcia takes comfort in the fact that Matthysse was beaten by Judah three years ago by a 12 round split decision. Garcia feels that because Judah beat Matthysse, then he should too without too many problems. What Garcia isn’t saying is that Matthysse’s loss was controversial, and that’s improved a lot since that time.

It’s doubtful that Judah would last six rounds with Matthysse, because he’s a lot more dangerous than he was three years ago. It’s too bad there’s no time for Matthysse to fight Judah in a rematch before the Garcia fight, because it would have been interesting to see what this version of Matthysse would do to Judah.
