Who’s next for Kell Brook?

brook6666By Rob Mack: Kell Brook (30-0, 20ko’s) is coming off the back of an impressive beating of American fringe contender Carson Jones (35-10, 25ko’s). Following the victory, Brook’s outspoken promoter Eddie Hearn has said that he has a “big fight” planned in September for ‘the special one’, and this has led to mass speculation about the unnamed opponent.

The first name to consider, a name on every British fan’s list, is that of Amir Khan (28-3, 19ko’s). Both Khan and Brook have made it clear in the past that neither fighter care for the other and this grudge match has been long overdue.

Amir Khan is rumoured to have taken the Devon Alexander title opportunity, however without any official confirmation of this match, I shall be writing this article with the view this match is a genuine possibility. I also think this would be a great way for Brook to fight a former world champion, whose vulnerabilities have far outshone his talents of late and will allow Brook to get his first taste of what it is like in the abyss of being a world title contender.

One cannot mention Amir Khan, without mentioning Devon Alexander (25-1, 14ko’s) as a potential September opponent. Brook and Alexander both cancelled bouts to fight earlier this year and this is another overdue match up. Personally I see this as a poor fight for Brook to take. Alexander is an awkward, slick and experienced champion and with Brook spending little time in the ring of late, a lack of sharpness could cost him.

When I heard Hearn say the words “big fight”, strangely the first name that came to mind was Adrien Broner (27-0, 22ko’s). Hearn has previously arranged a world title fight between ‘The Problem’ and domestic talent Gavin Rees and with Broner recently emerging as WBA Welterweight champion this would be a great opportunity for both fighters. Broner has yet to stamp his mark on the Welterweight division and there would be no better way to do this than to eliminate an unbeaten and talented genuine contender. Brook would be fighting an equally slick, yet lazier opponent, who looked very close to losing his first contest at welterweight and with size advantages this would be an exciting and very winnable fight.

The final name that has being ‘doing the rounds’ is Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22ko’s). I don’t see what Brook has to gain from fighting Ortiz. If Brook was to beat Ortiz, many would claim that Victor is ‘shot’ and a retirement would be imminent, however the reality is Ortiz (in my eyes) is still a contender and has the power to stop any opponent. I seriously hope this isn’t going to be Brook’s first taste of an elite fighter, because there is little prize in a victory and a very real chance that Ortiz could come out looking like the former world champion and dangerous opponent that he should be respected as.
