DSC_4269(Photo credit: Steve Lopez) By Allan Fox: Former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-2, 22 KO’s) made weight on Friday for what could be a disastrous fight against Jesus Soto Karass (27-8-3, 17 KO’s) on Saturday night at the AT&T Center, in San Antonio, Texas, USA. Berto weighed in at 147 lbs, and Soto Karass also came in at 147.

In the co-feature, unbeaten welterweight Keith Thurman (20-0, 18 KO’s) weighed in at 146 for his fight against Diego Chaves (22-0, 18 KO’s) for the interim WBC welterweight title. Chaves weighed in slightly heavier at 146.25.

Unbeaten super middleweight Anthony Dirrell (25-0, 21 KO’s) weighed in at 172 lbs, and his opponent Anthony Hanshaw (23-3-2, 14 KO’s) weighed in at 171.5.

Berto could be making a huge mistake in taking this fight Soto Karass, because he’s very similar to Berto’s last opponent Robert Guerrero with his fighting style and he might actually be a little bit better than Guerrero. Soto Karass can throws just as many punches oer round as Guerrero, but he throws with better power and he’s able to do more things in the ring.

Berto will have to be improved in a big way if he wants to beat Soto Karass, because if he’s only a little bit better than he was I his last fight against Guerrero, then Soto Karass will likely beat him by a wide decision.

Berto’s conditioning has gone downhill since 2010, and he’s looked poor in two out of his last three fights. Against guys that he can overpower, Berto doesn’t show stamina issues because he’s able to end the fights quickly, but Victor Ortiz and Guerrero were able to expose his stamina problems.

If Soto Karass is able to average 70-100 punches thrown per round for 12 rounds, it’s going to be awfully difficult for Berto to win this fight because he’s going to get hit a lot and he’s going to take a ton of punishment. At the same time, Berto could wear down trying to match Soto Karass’ high punch output.

Official weights:

Andre Berto 147 – Jesus Soto Karass
Diego Chaves 146.25 – Keith Thurman 146
Omar Figueroa 135 – Nihito Arakawa 135
Anthony Dirrell 172 – Anthony Hanshaw 171.5
