Three boxers who should consider moving down in weight

broner6Miguel Cotto – We all know Cotto’s best performances were at welterweight. He was strong, fit and had KO power. At 154, Cotto has been a small light middleweight and against the elite, has come short, e.g. Floyd Mayweather and Austin Trout. This has been down to poor conditioning as Cotto is not a natural light middleweight and is blowing up not at his physical best at 154.

Cotto has probably the worst conditioning of the elite boxers in the sport. With better conditioning, I believe Cotto will easily make welterweight and be at his best.  As Cotto is now the Top Rank, I would like to see Cotto against Bradley for the WBO title should Bradley defeat Juan Manuel Marquez.

Sergio Martinez – Sergio got his name by being the best 154 pounder in the world even without a world title at that weight. Martinez is no way a natural middleweight as someone who started out as a welterweight. Sergio can easily make 154 as he says and really he should. Based on his last few performances, Sergio has looked vulnerable to the power of natural Middleweights, e.g. Martin Murray and with his rising age, Martinez should go down in weight to 154 for a final few super showdowns with either Canelo or Mayweather.

Adrien Broner – Against Paulie Malignaggi, we got a snapshot of what Broner would be like at welterweight and it was not impressive. Broner looked blown up – the extra weight and muscle slowed down Broner and took away his skills in speed and slick movement. He also seemed to lose his KO power. I would like to see Broner return to 135 against the likes of Marquez, Miguel Vasquez and Ricky Burns. Broner has potential to be the undisputed no.1 at lightweight – and by having a couple of fights at 135, his star image will only rise with potential for a future p4p and ppv star.
